Japan: Our Lady’s Warnings at Akita Went Unheeded

Portuguese

In Japan in 1973, Our Lady manifested herself to Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa, then aged 42, at the convent of the Servants of the Holy Eucharist in Yuzawadai, near Akita, province of Tohoku.

In other words, in the area most affected by the earthquake and tsunami that have just wreaked havoc in Japan.

Akita is located at the same latitude of the colossal temblor, but on the western side of the island, roughly 100 miles from Sendai, the worst-hit town, located on the eastern side of the archipelago.

Newspapers, TV stations and Internet sites all over the world are carrying pictures of the frightful ruins of the city of Sendai and its surroundings.

Akita was hit by the earthquake but not by the devastating tsunami. The shrine of Our Lady suffered no significant damage.

The earthquake and tsunami brought back to memory Our Lady’s solemn warnings to the clergy and the world in 1973.

According to many witnesses, from that date onward the statue of Our Lady has shed tears over one hundred times and also blood on other occasions.

The Church hierarchy analyzed this mystical phenomenon.

Our Lady's manifestations
in Akita and her warnings
if the clergy and the world
failed to do penance.

In April 1984, after an exhaustive investigation, Most Rev. John Shojiro Ito, Bishop of Niihata, Japan declared that the events of Akita are authentically supernatural and authorized the whole diocese to venerate the Holy Mother of God of Akita.

In June 1988, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a definitive judgment on the events and messages of Akita and declared them reliable and worthy of belief.

In its edition of November 11, 184, the Italian magazine, Jesus, reported that the same Cardinal Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI commented that the messages of Fatima and Akita are “essentially the same.”

On the other hand, the concordance of Our Lady’s messages at Fatima and Akita with her message at La Salette are so striking as to dispense with any comment.

Those who remember Our Lady’s extremely grave warnings in Japan in 1973 – and precisely in the worst-hit area – are deeply impressed with the similarity of that prophecy with the present catastrophe.

Even more, they are horrified with what may yet be in store. For in Akita, Our Lady announced chastisements even more terrible than this earthquake, if the Catholic clergy and the world do not repent and amend their lives.

It is painful to say it, but Our Lady was not heeded; even worse, her maternal warnings were forgotten.

This is an extraordinarily opportune moment for us to turn to her and give her the attention and obedience that she deserves, placing all our confidence in the inexhaustible mercy of the Mother of God.

But, just what did Our Lady say and ask for at Akita?

On February 17, 1994, The Wanderer published a long report based on the Official Akita Book, authored by Fr. Teiji Yasuda, O.S.V.

We have drawn from it the information below, so eloquent as to make any comment appear superfluous.

One of the most impressive messages of Our Lady at Akita was given on October 13, 1973. In it, the Blessed Mother said:

“If men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before.

“Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead.

“The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son. Each day, recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests.

“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against other bishops.

“The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres [other priests].

Our Lady of Akita
“The Church and altars will be vandalized. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

“"The demon will rage especially against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness.

“If sins increase in number and gravity, there will no longer be pardon for them."

“Pray the Rosary often. Only I can prevent the disaster.

“Whoever entrusts themselves to me will be saved.”
